In 2023 staff, parents and children told us their ‘essential’ reads. We made lists for each year group, with the idea being that by the end of the academic year the children will have been read each of the books on their year group’s ‘spine’

We conduct regular audits of our selection to ensure that the list meets our cohorts' needs; for example last year we found that, whilst there was a diverse range of characters, with different ethnicities represented in main or minor characters, we were less diverse in other ways, such as disability, LGBTQ+ and in the diversity of authors and illustrators.  We have had a bit of a re-jiggle as a result!
