Prevent
The aim of Prevent is to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
The objectives of Prevent are to:
- tackle the ideological causes of terrorism
- intervene early to support people susceptible to radicalisation
- enable people who have already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate
From 2015, all schools have had a duty to safeguard children from radicalisation and extremism. The way in which we do this involves the following:
- Promote the fundamental British Values within our curriculum
- Make sure the school is a safe place for pupils to discuss sensitive topics, including terrorism and extremism
- Ensure that we have robust safeguarding procedures to identify children at risk
- Engage with Hampshire County Council’s risk assessment to determine the potential risk of individuals being drawn into terrorism in your local area
- Make sure we have measures in place to protect pupils from harmful online content, including setting up appropriate filtering and monitoring systems
- Make sure staff receive training to help them identify pupils at risk, challenge extremist ideas, and know how to act if they have a concern
The school’s Core Values of Be kind, be confident and love learning, as well as our Learning Powers – in particular Celebrate Difference – further support the teaching around the British Values.
Through our interactions with the children, teaching content, staff recruitment and training, we strive to ensure that children at Buryfields are kept safe from the threats that terrorism pose.
The school has completed a risk assessment which can be found below.
Further information for parents and carers can be found on the Education Against Hate website.
Should any parent, carer or member of the local community have any concerns about radicalisation or extremism, please contact the police or speak with a safeguarding lead in school: Lauren English, Laura Elliott or Mary Brice.
